Eating a Good Breakfast

 

Most nutritionists agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day; it literally “Breaks” our fast after a night’s sleep, replenishes our energy, and stores and provides us with essential nutrients we need to start our day.

Make time for breakfast!

 

 

Snack Right, Snack Light...

 

Great Healthy Snack Ideas:

*                      Air popped popcorn

*                      Unsalted pretzels

*                      100% fruit juices

*                      Fruit kabobs with low fat yogurt dip

*                      Frozen fruit bars

*                      Celery stuffed with low fat cheese spread

*                      Pita bread toasted with jam

*                      Cold cereal

*                      Rice cakes

*                      Orange slices

*                      Gelatin with fruit

*                      Angel food cake with fresh fruit puree

 

Too Sick For School

 

v    Vomits twice or more over a 24-hour period.

v    Has an oral temperature higher than 100.

v    Coughs almost constantly or has difficulty breathing.

v    Repeated bouts of diarrhea or bloody stools.

v    Exhibits abdominal pain for more than two hours.

v    Has open soars on the mouth.

v    Displays a skin rash or red eye, and you don’t know why.

v    Is infested with lice or scabies.

v    Shows symptoms of contagious such as chickenpox, German measles, hepatitis A, impetigo, measles, mumps, shingles, strep throat or whooping cough.

 

 

 

 

Parents are encouraged to keep their children home for 24 hours and to consult with a physician if the child has any of the following:

 

*           Open wet sores

*           Bare spots on the scalp

*           Sore throats

*           Fever

*           Suspicious rash

*           Diarrhea

*           Vomiting

*           Earache

*           Persistent cough and /or temperatures (100° or more)

 

Conditions to Be 
Excluded By Nurse

 

Conjunctivitis – If drainage is pus-like student must stay out of school until condition clears or until he/she can supply a doctor’s note to return to school.

 

Chicken Pox – Student may return to school without a doctor’s note when all lesions are dry and scabbed over, (at least 7 days).

 

Fever – Student must have a normal temperature for 24 hours before he/she may return to school.

 

Temperature – Of 100° and above necessitates exclusion from school. 

 

Impetigo – Student must furnish a note from doctor to return to school when she/he deems it’s clear.

 

Lice – Student may return to school when all nits are out of hair.  Nurse must inspect student prior to riding the bus or entry to school. 

 

Non Compliance – Failure to comply with State Immunization Requirements is a reason to Exclude a student from school.

 

Poison ivy– If the rash is oozing even after Calamine lotion or Galadriel is applied, you may not come to school.

 

Rash – Students having rashes of unknown identify involving more than a localized area are to be excluded from school until the rash is clear or doctor’s note allowing student to return to school is provided with diagnosis.

 

Scabies – Excluded from school until a doctor’s note indicating treatment complete and problem eradicated.

 

Strep throat – When throat culture is positive, a student will be excluded from school.

 

Sun burn - if condition is severe, exclude the student from school.

 

Dress for the Season

*                      Layers of clothing; for example, T-shirt

*                      Wear a wind breaker over your shirts to help keep out the  

               wind

*                      Keep clothing lose

*                      Do Not forget raincoats, if there is a chance of rain.

Influenza Facts

 

Flu is Dangerous. Influenza is a viral infection.  Flu season begins in October and runs through March (peaks between January – March).

 

Vaccines Available:

 

v    Flu shot

v    LAIV (nasal spray) flu mist

 

Flu vaccine is different every year (viruses change every year).  Protection develops in about two weeks.  Do not get the flu vaccine if you are allergic to eggs or had a previous reaction.  Check with your doctor if you have any questions. 

 

Influenza virus is contagious one day prior to becoming sick and 3-7 days after symptoms appear.  Fever in children with influenza or Chicken Pox should not take aspirin, it may cause Reye Syndrome.  Salicylates found in products may cause Reye Syndrome.  Check label for “hidden” Salicylates (ex: Pepto Bismol)

 

Remember it is always a good idea to use a new toothbrush after you have been sick or on antibiotics.

Prevent Colds & Flu

 

How to wash your hands!!!

v    Use warm water and soap

v    Rub hands vigorously for 20 seconds

v    Wash palms, backs, under fingernails, between fingers, and wrists

v    Rinse off all soap

v    Dry hands with paper towels

v    Use the paper towel to turn off water tap

v    Use the paper towel to open bathroom door
