Marking Period 1
- 2008 – Questions of the Month…
How do I receive
extra credit?
v You will receive
an ID code for the use of
5
extra credit points. Students who
do not have a computer at home,
may stay after
school and use the computer lab, if they choose to do so. You must sign up in
the computer lab to stay after school. There
is a maximum of 25
v Read a book from
the District Summer Reading List,
then come to class and pick up an extra credit book review/presentation
form. This is worth a 100 quiz grade,
which replaces the lowest quiz grade of the marking period. There will be a due
date.
v Extra credit
points are given to the winning team for a number of in-class games.
v There will be
a maximum of 50 total extra credit points for the marking period.
How do I take out
library books?
Each Language
Arts class goes to the library every other week. Students will be issued an ID card which will
be used in the library and lunch room.
Each time we visit the library, students will need their planner, ID Card, and library books. Fines are issued for overdue and
lost books.
How do I travel
to the nurse or restroom?
Your planner is
your Passport! You must have a pass to
go to the restroom and to the nurse.
These passes are located in the back of the planner, and must be used
each day.
What if I can’t
open my locker?
The sixth grade
teachers know that you might have difficulty for the first few weeks of school,
and we’re all ready to help you. Mrs.
Viola is one teacher who has the key to all the lockers,
and her computer lab is right next to the sixth grade lockers. The guidance
counselor is available to help you as well.
In addition, for the first few weeks of school, Mrs. Mazur stays after
school to help her students if they are worried about the lockers. Many people are around to help, and all of
them know you might need assistance. Don’t worry, by the time Christmas rolls
around, you’ll be an ace at the lockers and getting to class on time.
STRATEGIES THAT
MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
SQ3R – A reading
comprehension strategy to use when a story is followed by questions. This strategy is extremely helpful for
nonfiction reading.
RARE – A strategy to
use when answering open ended questions and persuasive essays.
R –
Restate the question.
A –
Answer the question ….using…
R –
Reasons…and….
E - Elaborations (more than an explanation)
5 W’s and How??? – Graphic
organizers are helpful to use as a strategy to gather ideas during the first few
minutes of a writing task. Using the 5W’s and How
will help the writer stay on topic and avoid “brain freeze” during a timed
speculative writing prompt.

HOMEWORK COUNTS! DO IT, REVIEW IT, and BRING IT IN! Parents…Please check the planners. If you spot a problem, contact me. Homework
is 15% of the grade.
